UW Medical Center - Northwest has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-TIME, DAY SHIFT, PHARMACY TECHNICIAN.
The Pharmacy Technician performs assigned pharmacy services activities under the general supervision and control of a licensed pharmacist. Assigned responsibilities are consistent with the individual's training and
experience.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
•Patient population includes adult, adolescent, geriatric, and neonatal patients depending on the practice location. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served
•Effective verbal and written communication skills
•Maintain a positive, direct, open communication line with members of the Northwest Hospital & Medical Center Medical Staff and their employees, hospital staff, patients and patient family members, and colleagues
•Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships with a diverse population
•Up-to-date on new drugs, and drug treatment developments in the hospital setting as applicable to role
•Support and participate in professional organizations
•Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional developments of all age groups
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
1. Engage in accurate and timely medication procurement, preparation and dispensing.
•Restock drug storage areas
•Refill automated drug dispensing devices in all hospital areas
•Package medications into single unit doses.
•Prepare patient specific doses as needed
•Prepare non-sterile compounding products in accordance with USP standards
•Handle and prepare oral hazardous drugs in accordance with USP standards
2.Promote appropriate, safe, and effective medication use through adherence to the UW Medicine/Northwest Hospital & Medical Center Pharmacy Department Policies and Procedures.
•Troubleshoot technical questions related to work area responsibilities
•Serve as a resource to nursing, pharmacy and medical staff for policies and procedures
•Triage to the pharmacist any clinical inquiries requiring a pharmacist’s professional judgement
3.Medication control and security, includes but is not limited to:
•Inspect and assist nursing units to maintain compliance with specified medication standards
•Ensure secure and effective storage and dispensing of medications
•Follow specified procedures related to controlled substances and maintain required documentation
4.Quality improvement, includes but is not limited to:
•Actively participate in programs to assure continuous quality improvement
•Participate in medication safety initiatives
5.Education and preceptorship, includes but is not limited to:
•Train and provide mentorship to new pharmacy technicians, pharmacy interns, pharmacy students, and externs
•Demonstrate effective teaching skills. Complete is not limited to.
Specialized Functions (as applicable based on training provided by department and Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission Approved Protocols):
1.Engage in IV admixture and other parenteral and sterile preparations.
•Correctly perform sterile compounding duties in accordance with USP Standards as related to:
•Materials staging (including handling of hazardous drugs)
•Hand hygiene and garbing
•Facility cleaning and disinfection
•Use of automated compounding devices
•Use of primary and secondary engineering controls
•Pressure gradient, temperature and humidity monitoring
•Document critical activities appropriately
•Complete ongoing competency evaluations
2.Collect accurate patient home medications lists
•Interview patients and/or their designated family/caregivers in hospital areas as assigned
•Utilize patient records, ambulatory pharmacy records, clinic records, long term care facility records, information from previous hospital encounters or any other pertinent records
•Consult with pharmacist as necessary regarding home medication lists.
•Maintain required documentation and records
3.Participate in Tech Check Tech Program
•Perform final check on medications under specific conditions
•Check each unit dose item filled by another pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern to determine correct medication, dose, dosage form, quantity, and expiration date.
•Complete ongoing competency evaluations
•Licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Washington.
PREFERRED:
•Pharmacy Technician Board Certification preferred.
•Hospital experience preferred.
Must have the manual dexterity sufficient for keyboarding and medication preparation for dispensing, including preparation of parenteral products.
