Summary Description:
- The Counter Sales Associate is responsible for selling items to the general public, pick parts for customer orders and pack them up in a timely matter.
- This position calls for someone who has high energy, is a team player, and maintains focus throughout a whole day. In addition, they must be affective at handling customers both on the phone and at the counter.
- Selling –
- Greets customers in a friendly and approachable fashion.
- Inquires as to how the customer can be assisted.
- Research and locate the requested part(s) and make suggestions as to other parts and/or supplies they may also need to complete their job or project.
- Must be comfortable with add on sales.
- Customer Service –
- Must have the ability to talk by phone or at the counter with customers with diplomacy and tact, as well as handle their needs appropriately and efficiently.
- Must have the ability to use the computer and be trained in basic computer skills.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Counter Sales Duties:
- Sells products and meet the customer's needs.
- Write up all orders promptly as received, ensuring the accuracy of all relevant details (e.g. specifications, processing requirements, shipping and handling, etc.)
- Take all relevant cost factors into consideration when developing quotes and ensure that quoted prices will be sufficient to deliver expected gross margins.
- Review the total in-stock and on order position to determine material availability and to anticipate potential excess and aged inventory issues.
- Monitor the status of customers’ orders and intervene as required to ensure on-time delivery.
- Contact customers to inform them as soon as it is determined that their order will be late or incomplete and work with them to minimize the consequences.
- Handle cancellations or changes in sales orders and communicate the changes with related departments.
- Work in close partnership with outside sales representatives handling the day-to-day business and developing strategic approaches by account to maximize sales and profit.
- Be an advocate for the customer in dealings with various departments such as Credit, Operations, Shipping and Purchasing.
- Understand the gross margin performance that is expected from your accounts.
- Review the profit performance of accounts on a regular basis and look for ways (e.g. pricing, product mix, processing set-ups, freight, etc.) to improve.
- Maintain customer goodwill by greeting and acknowledge all customers he/she comes in contact with.
- Assist in keeping the showroom clean and orderly.
- Maintains the retail sale floor and displays to meet or exceed the standards and today's customer satisfaction.
- Controls showroom inventory to ensure maximum sales and customer satisfaction.
- Attends training as prescribed by management to maintain proficiency in his/her job description.
- Uses equipment and resources safely and proficiently.
- Performs other tasks as required by Manager.
- Keeps himself/herself groomed and clothed per company guidelines.
- Follow up on shortages and expedite by reporting to Manager.
- Should be knowledgeable in merchandising
2. Customer Service:
- Assist in handling customer complaints and concerns and make sure the problem is corrected to the customer and company’s satisfaction.
- Greet customers immediately in a courteous manner.
- Treat customers fairly and with honesty and demonstrate our commitment to superior customer service and ethical business practices.
3. Qualifications and Job Requirements:
- Ability to speak effectively one on one.
- Previous interaction and experience working with customers, preferably within the steel industry.
- Highly developed customer service skills.
- Excellent communications and telephone sales personality skills.
- Effective time management skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize day-to-day activities.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook. Stelplan experience is a plus.
- Ability to effectively listen.
- Ability to interpret customer needs.
- Basic computer skills.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
- Good organizational skills.
4. Physical Demands:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
- Frequently required to bend, stoop, crouch, and reach.
