Position Purpose
The System Oncology Pharmacy Manager advances oncology pharmacy clinical practice and patient care across Intermountain Healthcare. This position promotes evidence-based and patient-focused practice, as well as minimizes waste and resource over-utilization while improving patient outcomes.
Scope
This is an enterprise-wide position responsible for leading oncology pharmacy practice throughout Intermountain Healthcare, including inpatient and outpatient clinic environments. The person in this role will manage numerous direct reports and collaborate closely with leaders from the Oncology Clinical Service, Clinical Trials Program, and Precision Health.
Essential Job Duties
- Promotes and leads efforts to reduce unnecessary variation in the care of patients with cancer.
- Makes decisions pertaining to oncology resourcing, practice models, and other related factors to meet both short- and long-term goals.
- Manages a team of oncology pharmacists who are deployed throughout various Intermountain Healthcare hospitals and clinics.
- Serves as a role model and mentor for pharmacists throughout the system.
- Engages with leaders of the Oncology Service Line to assess current system capabilities regarding oncology pharmacy practice and provide recommendations to the Executive Leadership Team, as requested.
- Engages with other organizational leaders to improve the use of oncologic agents and optimize clinical outcomes.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
- Develops and directs the implementation and prioritization of a structured framework for oncology pharmacy across the Intermountain system including inpatient and outpatient practice.
- Defines and tracks key performance indicators for quantifying the success of interventions and use of oncologic pharmaceuticals.
- Reports oncology-related metrics and trends to organizational leaders, and other stakeholders, on a regular basis.
- Collaborates with leaders from Drug Information Services, Supply Chain Organization, and other facility-based leaders to manage and mitigate the impact of medication shortages affecting oncologic medications and optimize the drug formulary.
- Conducts medication-use evaluations and other quality assurance projects to ensure the clinically appropriate and judicious use of antineoplastic medications.
- Participates in efforts to optimize technology systems to ensure optimal use of antineoplastic therapy, including the electronic medical record system, Via Oncology clinical pathways, smart infusion pumps, etc.
- Serves on the System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Explores the possible development of revenue-generating programs and other innovations pertinent to oncology practice.
- Initiates, participates, and coordinates system-level oncology pharmacy research initiatives, as appropriate, in partnership with the Intermountain Office of Research and Cancer Clinical Trials Program.
- Partners with the Medication Safety Team to conduct case reviews of adverse events associated with antineoplastic drug use.
Minimum Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
- Current license to practice pharmacy in the state of Utah or willing to obtain prior to start date.
- (1) Completion of a postgraduate specialty residency in oncology pharmacy practice,
or (2) completion of four years of practice experience (post-pharmacist licensure) with at least 50% of time spent conducting oncology pharmacy activities, or (3) completion of a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency plus two years of additional experience (post-pharmacist licensure) with at least 50% of time spent conducting oncology pharmacy activities. - Strong communication, people management, and project management skills.
- Experience teaching, guiding, leading, and mentoring other professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification as an oncology pharmacist (BCOP)
- Experience managing and leading direct reports.
- Experience working in an integrated healthcare delivery system.
